Key to this ambition is the launch of World Eat for Good Day on 19 February.

Many of us want to eat foods that are good for us and good for the planet but find it hard to know what changes to make or where to start. World Eat for Good Day aims to unleash that inner ‘Eativist’ hidden in us all. It promises to be a day packed with new recipes and smart ingredient swaps that make taking action easier than you think.

‘It’s time to banish mealtime monotony for the betterment of ourselves and the planet,’ says Dorothy Shaver, registered dietitian and Global Marketing Sustainability Lead for Knorr. ‘We can eat our way to a better food future. Chef and foodie influencers around the globe – including Netflix’s Restaurants on the Edge chef Dennis Prescott – will be sharing and demonstrating recipes on their social feeds and asking everyone to swap at least one ingredient in their routine meals each week for a Future 50 Food, with help from the flavours on offer in Knorr’s range of products.

Knorr’s Instagram and Facebook pages will be a part of the day, hosting fun polls and quizzes packed with good food foodie facts. To mark the occasion further, Hasbro Inc’s iconic MR. 9 practical tips for a healthy and sustainable diet

Each of us contributes to the impact that our food system has on the planet. We can all commit to making the world a healthier place to live, through small but achievable changes to our diets.

1. Eat more fruits and vegetables

Fruit and vegetables are good for our health, and most come with a low environmental impact. There are exceptions, as some require a lot of resources to transport and keep fresh, so eating these less frequently can increase the sustainability of our diets.  Examples include:

  • fruits and vegetables that are fragile, or require refrigeration (salads and berries)
  • vegetables that are grown in protected conditions (such as hot-house tomatoes or cucumbers)
  • foods that use a lot of resources during transport (green beans, mange-touts, or berries imported from the southern hemisphere).

2. Eat locally, when in season

Locally-grown foods can be a sustainable choice, if we choose those that are in season where we live. The cost of producing or storing local foods beyond their natural growing seasons could be higher than shipping foods that are in season somewhere else.

3. Avoid eating more than needed, especially treats

Consuming only what we need reduces demands on our food supply by decreasing excess production. It also helps to keep us healthy and avoid excessive weight gain. Limiting snacking on energy-dense low-nutrient foods and paying attention to portion sizes are all useful ways to avoid unnecessary overconsumption.

Step 1. Start with your net income

Building out a budget should begin with seeing what you have to work with. That starting point is your net income, or how much money you actually take home after expenses. If your paycheck automatically deducts things like taxes, retirement, and employer-based insurance, then your net take-home pay is your net income. If those deductions aren’t already taken out, you’ll need to subtract them from your pay to determine your net income for the purpose of budgeting.

You’ll be creating a monthly budget, so be sure to calculate what your net income is per month (which may not be the same as per paycheck).

Step 2. Write down where your money is going

Next, you’ll need to set a baseline for your budget. Start by writing down all of your expenses you may incur during a month. If you’re not sure where all of your money is going, spend the next month tracking your spending so you can create a general picture. We recommend using a spreadsheet or application to track your expenses, but there are also free budgeting worksheets online that can help with this, too.
