Early Signs of Lung Cancer

1. Cough that won’t quit

Be on alert for a new cough that lingers. A cough associated with a cold or respiratory infection will go away in a week or two, but a persistent cough that lingers can be a symptom of lung cancer.

Don’t be tempted to dismiss a stubborn cough, whether it’s dry or produces mucus. See your doctor right away. They will listen to your lungs and may order an X-ray or other tests.

2. Change in a cough

Pay attention to any changes in a chronic cough, particularly if you smoke. If you’re coughing more often, your cough is deeper or sounds hoarse, or you’re coughing up blood or an unusual amount of mucus, it’s time to make a doctor’s appointment.

If a family member or friend experiences these changes, suggest that they visit their doctor. Learn about the symptoms and causes of bronchorrhea.

3. Breathing changes

Shortness of breath or becoming easily winded are also possible symptoms of lung cancer. Changes in breathing can occur if lung cancer blocks or narrows an airway, or if fluid from a lung tumor builds up in the chest.

Make a point of noticing when you feel winded or short of breath. If you find it difficult to breathe after climbing stairs or performing tasks you once found easy, don’t ignore it.

4. Pain in the chest area

Lung cancer may produce pain in the chest, shoulders, or back. An aching feeling may not be associated with coughing. Tell your doctor if you notice any type of chest pain, whether it’s sharp, dull, constant, or intermittent.

You should also note whether it’s confined to a specific area or occurring throughout your chest. When lung cancer causes chest pain, the discomfort may result from enlarged lymph nodes or metastasis to the chest wall, the lining around the lungs, called pleura, or the ribs.

5. Wheezing

When airways become constricted, blocked, or inflamed, the lungs produce a wheezing or whistling sound when you breathe. Wheezing can be associated with multiple causes, some of which are benign and easily treatable.

However, wheezing is also a symptom of lung cancer, which is why it merits your doctor’s attention. Don’t assume that wheezing is caused by asthma or allergies. Have your doctor confirm the cause.

6. Raspy, hoarse voice

If you hear a significant change in your voice, or if someone else points out that your voice sounds deeper, hoarse, or raspier, get checked out by your doctor.

Hoarseness can be caused by a simple cold, but this symptom may point to something more serious when it persists for more than two weeks. Hoarseness related to lung cancer can occur when the tumor affects the nerve that controls the larynx, or voice box.

7. Drop in weight

An unexplained weight loss of 10 pounds or more may be associated with lung cancer or another type of cancer. When cancer is present, this drop in weight may result from cancer cells using energy. It could also result from shifts in the way the body uses energy from food.

Don’t write off a change in your weight if you haven’t been trying to shed pounds. It may be a clue to a change in your health.

1. Eat more fruits and vegetables

Fruit and vegetables are good for our health, and most come with a low environmental impact. There are exceptions, as some require a lot of resources to transport and keep fresh, so eating these less frequently can increase the sustainability of our diets.  Examples include:

  • fruits and vegetables that are fragile, or require refrigeration (salads and berries)
  • vegetables that are grown in protected conditions (such as hot-house tomatoes or cucumbers)
  • foods that use a lot of resources during transport (green beans, mange-touts, or berries imported from the southern hemisphere).

2. Eat locally, when in season

Locally-grown foods can be a sustainable choice, if we choose those that are in season where we live. The cost of producing or storing local foods beyond their natural growing seasons could be higher than shipping foods that are in season somewhere else.

3. Avoid eating more than needed, especially treats

Consuming only what we need reduces demands on our food supply by decreasing excess production. It also helps to keep us healthy and avoid excessive weight gain. Limiting snacking on energy-dense low-nutrient foods and paying attention to portion sizes are all useful ways to avoid unnecessary overconsumption.

If your paycheck automatically deducts things like taxes, retirement, and employer-based insurance, then your net take-home pay is your net income. If those deductions aren’t already taken out, you’ll need to subtract them from your pay to determine your net income for the purpose of budgeting.

You’ll be creating a monthly budget, so be sure to calculate what your net income is per month (which may not be the same as per paycheck).

Step 2. Write down where your money is going

Next, you’ll need to set a baseline for your budget. Start by writing down all of your expenses you may incur during a month. If you’re not sure where all of your money is going, spend the next month tracking your spending so you can create a general picture. Jayant Barve: Maharashtra’s organic farmer who became manure millionaire

An MSc in Physics, Barve, till then, had stayed away from farming despite his family owning land in Vita. He decided to opt for organic farming of grapes on an acre of land. He read books, met up with experts and after using vermicompost for a year, observed that the soil’s nutrient quality, as well as carbon and potash levels, had increased with organic farming. Not only was his grape crop excellent, but it also encouraged him to make vermicompost on a larger scale. 

“We bought vegetable market waste from the Vita Municipal Council for three years to make vermicompost for our farm. Our grapes were best in class and exported. But around that time I read that directly adding organic carbon to the soil leads to natural worm growth and there is no need for separate vermiculture,” recollects 77-year-old Barve, who now practices organic farming over 30 acres, cultivating fruits like mango, banana and sapodilla (chikoo), vegetables as well as cereal grains.

White House says it condemns violence at Capitol, law breakers should be prosecuted

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – President Donald Trump’s spokeswoman, Kayleigh McEnany, on Thursday condemned violence at the Capitol as un-American and called for those who broke the law to be prosecuted.

“We condemn it – the president and this administration – in the strongest possible terms,” McEnany told reporters amid growing calls for Trump’s removal from office after his supporters on Wednesday stormed the U.S. Capitol in unrest that resulted in four deaths.

“It is unacceptable, and those that broke the law should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” McEnany said in the White House briefing room. She declined to take questions.

Trump, temporarily blocked from using Twitter and banned from Facebook for at least two weeks, made no public appearances on Thursday.

The Republican president pledged in an early morning statement to carry out an “orderly transition” of power to President-elect Joe Biden, but continued to claim falsely the election victory was stolen from him.
